Improving the Quality of Life in a Vermont Village

Challenge

The existing configuration routed large traffic volumes, including a significant number of large trucks, through a series of sharp curves within the Village of Morrisville. To reduce conflicts and improve safety, VTrans selected MJ to design a new two-mile road that would bypass the village.

Solution

The project included a number of important elements including two traffic signals, a comprehensive stormwater treatment system, and a number of new frontage roads. A new visually pleasing continuous steel multi-plate girder slant leg frame bridge spanning 520' over the Lamoille River was also included. A pedestrian underpass will allow school children to safely cross the highway and a bridge allows recreation traffic to cross the alignment. An upgrade to a section of VT 15 was also required, including interconnection of two traffic signals, along with the construction of a new entrance road to the Morrisville Wastewater Plant. This project involved an extensive public participation process and required the development of a re-evaluation document and environmental assessment of the original EIS done over 30 years earlier.
