Challenge
The City of Concord desired an attractive and vibrant Main Street. The Downtown Complete Streets Improvement Project proposed a transformation of Main Street, making it a destination for residents, shoppers, and tourists.
Solution
The goal of this project was to create a "Complete Street" by making Main Street more attractive with enhanced landscaping and streetscape features, improved accessibility for all users, improved safety through traffic calming, and improved pedestrian and bicycle accommodation, all while maintaining its historic character.
The approved layout for Main Street converted its four lanes into two lanes with a traversable layout center median, providing shared lanes for cars and bicycles. Also included were widened sidewalks with landscaping features, seating, and lighting, as well as parking on both sides of the street. MJ guided an extensive public outreach program that included several public meetings to engage citizens in the design development, as well as several presentations to the Concord City Council for approval. A project specific website and Facebook page were developed by MJ to ensure all interested parties had accurate and current project information.
MJ led the design and public approval of a very challenging urban infrastructure improvement project. The Town benefited from MJ's experienced and professional public outreach qualifications for projects which demand extensive public engagement. This project demonstrates MJ's ability to successfully work through a project with many competing interests. The historic area of the City further complicated the project, requiring extensive design consideration to accommodate ADA requirements and avoidance of impacts in this culturally significant corridor. MJ used a robust Public Outreach process to develop a preferred alternative that met all of the City's Main Street corridor improvement goals.
