As part of the new Quincy Center project the Burgin Parkway Access Road (now renamed as Dunford Drive) serves as a critical element in providing improved access and circulation to this urban renewal project near downtown. The roadway provides access from the Burgin Parkway, one of the main arterials within Quincy, to this important new office park within the city. In addition to the work to create the new roadway and intersection, Burgin Parkway was widened and improved to provide a raised median with new LED lighting that matches the surrounding area while allowing a pedestrian crossing on the parkway. The new roadway includes a 63’ single span bridge crossing over both the MBTA’s Red Line and Commuter Rail Line.

The bridge, which is now named the “Generals Bridge,” was constructed using accelerated bridge construction methods. The superstructure, which was designed using Precast Bridge Units constructed off-site, was placed during one weekend to minimize the closure of the railroad lines. The new bridge honors the 18 senior level generals that were born and raised in Quincy. The new roadway is an integral part of the redevelopment of the entire site, providing a pedestrian mall containing a park that honors the generals and their accomplishments. Extensive utility coordination was required to accommodate and relocate sanitary sewer, storm drain, water, gas, and electric lines that ran through the site, which has been occupied since colonial times.
