US Airways Flight 1549ís forced landing into the Hudson River brought new focus and attention on aircraft wildlife strikes. The FAA now requires Wildlife Hazard Assessments (WHA) for all Part 139 airports and encourages them for General Aviation airports. Airport Improvement Program funds are available to conduct these studies.

A WHA includes:

  • An analysis of the airportís wildlife strike history
  • Identification of the wildlife species observed and their numbers, locations, local movements, and daily and seasonal occurrences
  • Identification and location of features on and near the airport that attract wildlife
  • A description of wildlife hazards to aircraft operations
  • If required, the Wildlife Hazard Management Plan (WHMP) identifies measures to be implemented to reduce the risk of wildlife strikes. As a full service aviation consulting firm, MJ has the insight into airport planning, design, and operations required to develop a practical WHMP tailored to the needs of the airport
