McFarland Johnson provided design and construction inspection for a 100,300 square foot pre-engineered metal building and fuel calibration structure to be located at the Elmira Corning Regional Airport. The entire project, from inception to ribbon cutting, was completed in only 13 months. This project involves the construction of a ramp/taxiway, which will link the site to the existing airport runway, along with a new building which will house office and manufacturing operations for use by Schweizer Aircraft Corporation, a subsidiary of Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation. The project was planned and designed to meet Sikorsky "Green Factory Guidance". Sustainable design features incorporated into the project include: design for the 100' hangar door to operate at variable openings, thus minimizing thermal exposure; the provision of radiant, gas-fired heat in the hangar area; use of energy efficient rated HVAC equipment; provision of increased insulation beyond code requirements; low-consumption water fixtures were included; a minimum percent of recycled content in building materials was specified; locally-sourced materials were specified; and no light pollution was allowed beyond the site limits.
The mechanical and plumbing services included the design of piping, ductwork, and HVAC equipment for offices and generalized manufacturing spaces; heating, ventilation and plumbing systems for the specialized manufacturing equipment; plumbing for office and factory washrooms; and compressed air systems for the manufacturing areas. Electrical services included the electrical power system design; lighting design for both the exterior and interior of the facility, as well as the parking area; and phone and data cabling for the computer network. Structural services included the determination of loading requirements, as well as the design of foundations, slab, interior load-bearing walls and retaining walls at the loading dock. McFarland Johnson provided design of both sprinkler and foam fire suppression systems, including selection of fire pump and piping for the sprinkler distribution system. Design was also provided for an addressable fire alarm system, including detection and alarm devices, as well as fire pump and sprinkler monitoring.
The Site/Civil design for this project included planning documents, site layout, utility plans, grading plans, underground sewer and stormwater management. A traffic study was also provided to evaluate impacts from the proposed manufacturing facility on surrounding roadway traffic operations. The adjacent roadway unsignalized and signalized intersections were analyzed for capacity and level of service to determine impacts and any necessary improvements needed as a result of the proposed facility. The analysis also included analysis of traffic signal warrants at the main entrance of the facility.
